South to Calabria Paintings 1999
South to Calabria are paintings responding to the long road journey from Tuscany to Calabria, a journey I've made many times. The journey is one of character, both in the landscape and in the people. I borrowed the title from a book called South to Calabria by Leslie Gardiner.
The journey in the paintings was a mental mapping of slowed down time, of an isolated space, a passing through space that felt full and empty at the same time, a contemplative space that happens on long car journeys where transition from place to place creates what seems to be a different reality only punctuated by random stops made during the journey.
South To Calabria written by Leslie Gardiner and published by William Blackwood Edinburgh & London 1968.
