Shipping Forecast Paintings 2002-2003

This series is named after the British Shipping Forecast. Historically, the forecast has been broadcast to shipping by BBC Radio for the sea areas around the coasts of the British Isles.
The broadcasts have a distinctive sound. The repetition of the names of the areas is almost mantra-like and hypnotic in tone. The Shipping Forecast can be heard on BBC Radio 4 Long-wave each evening at 5:54 pm (in the UK).
For each of the paintings in this series I listened to the forecast for one of the sea areas. I imagined the state of the sea, the sky, and the weather, and I made the painting. I also made a painting for a fictional sea area.
My friend and fellow artist Carry Akroyd described the paintings as having “cross-currents and undulations like the sea, that creates surface tension.” I like the description.
For a brilliantly entertaining insight into the names, location and much more of the Shipping Forecast Areas, I highly recommend the book “Attention All Shipping: A Journey Round the Shipping Forecast” by Charlie Connelly.
